ATLANTA (AP) -- Thousands of marchers stormed the Georgia Capitol on Saturday to protest the state's new immigration law, which they say creates an unwelcome environment for people of color and those in search of a better life.
Men, women and children of all ages converged on downtown Atlanta for the march and rally, cheering speakers while shading themselves with umbrellas and posters. Capitol police and organizers estimated the crowd at between 8,000 and 14,000. They filled the blocks around the Capitol, holding signs decrying House Bill 87 and reading "Immigration Reform Now!"
Friends Jessica Bamaca and Melany Cordero held a poster that read: "How would you feel if your family got broken apart?"
Bamaca was born in the U.S., but her mother and sister are from Guatemala. She said she fears they will be deported.
"I would be here by myself," said Bamaca, 13. "I have a feeling (the governor) doesn't know the pain affecting families. If he were to be in our position, how would he react?"
Adelina Nicholls, executive director of the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights, said the crowd was sending a message.
"They are ready to fight," Nicholls said. "We need immigration reform, and no HB87 is going to stop us. We have earned the right to be here."
Azadeh Shahshahani of the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia called the rally inspiring and said she hoped lawmakers would recognize the law's potential to damage the state.
"I think it's going to have an impact," she said. "Unfortunately, the damage has already been done as far as people of color having second thoughts about moving to Georgia."
Several different groups stood with the largely Latino crowd, including representatives from the civil rights movement. The Rev. Timothy McDonald, an activist who has been supportive of immigration protesters, was among the speakers showing his solidarity.
"You are my brothers and my sisters," McDonald told the crowd. "Some years ago, they told people like me we couldn't vote. We did what you are doing today. We are going to send a message to the powers that be ... that when the people get united, there is no government that can stop them. Don't let them turn you around."
MiLi Lai, a student at Emory who is Chinese, also attended the rally because the immigration law doesn't just apply to Latinos, but "all non-American people."
"We are the same community," Lai said. "We have to fight for our rights."
Bellanira Avoytes came to the rally with her husband and three children. Although she is a legal resident and her children were born in Georgia, she does not see herself as separate from undocumented Latinos.
"I have family who are not residents," she said. "I am together with the Latin people. I love Georgia. I have stayed here for 18 years. I want to buy a house here."
Saturday's rally follows a "day without immigrants" organized Friday, when some parts of the law took effect. It was organized by the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights. The organization asked businesses to close and community members not to work or shop to protest the law.
On Monday, a judge temporarily blocked key parts of the law until a legal challenge is resolved. One provision that was blocked authorizes police to check the immigration status of suspects without proper identification. It also authorizes them to detain undocumented immigrants. Another penalizes people who knowingly and willingly transport or harbor undocumented immigrants while committing another crime.
Parts of similar measures in Arizona, Utah and Indiana also have been blocked by the courts.
Provisions that took effect Friday include one that makes it a felony to use false information or documentation when applying for a job. Another provision creates an immigration review board to investigate complaints about government officials not complying with state laws related to undocumented immigration.

This week Senators Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Tom Coburn (R-Ok.) introduced a proposal to eliminate $600 billion from the Medicare system. They should have been applauded, commended and celebrated around the country. Instead, democrats swiftly rejected their proposal. No questions asked. They were portrayed by liberals as attacking the benefits of seniors and of being out of touch with main stream America. I would argue they may be the most "in touch" members of the Senate. Sadly Americans will not have the opportunity to hear how this proposal could actually maintain Medicare as a viable program for seniors and disabled while addressing its long term funding crisis.
To me, a believer in the healthcare reform legislation, these attacks were unfair, misguided, and quite frankly, downright ridiculous. There is no question the Medicare program is in financial trouble. Whether you are a republican, democrat, or independent, no one can argue the Medicare program has sufficient funds to pay for all the expected benefits for future generations of Americans who will rely on this entitlement program.
While there is nothing simple when it comes to healthcare, Senators Lieberman and Coburn have some rational (and admittedly controversial) ideas for saving the Medicare program including:
1) Raising the Medicare eligibility age to 67 from the current 65;
2) Increasing the premiums for wealthy seniors for their Part B premiums (the doctor portion of the program),
3) Implementing real and meaningful steps to reduce fraud and waste and simplify how healthcare is administered.
This country can no longer afford politics as usual; particularly when it comes to saving Medicare, and the country, from financial ruin. When Medicare was created back in 1965, Americans did not live as long and we did not spend as much on our healthcare as a percentage of gross domestic product. Simply put, healthcare costs were much lower and less significant to our overall economy as they are today. So the idea that we can leave the existing program intact, without making meaningful and structural changes is a flawed argument. While there are certainly many ideas and programs to fix Medicare, I believe it is going to require a full blown overhaul. The creators of Medicare did not intend for the program to bankrupt the country or run out of money in 20 years from now.
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was a meaningful, and in my belief, good start in addressing some of our country's biggest challenges: providing healthcare access to all Americans. However, while there are many initiatives included in the legislation to meet this goal, I believe the law does not adequately provide the mechanisms to save enough money to keep the program viable. The funding issues facing Medicare are as significant now as they were when the act became law in March 2010. As I was a year ago when the law was passed, I am concerned over its long term financial viability.
During the debate over healthcare reform, I was very clear that the legislation being discussed and debated at the time had many flaws. I was also clear in my belief that while the bill was not perfect, it was a very bold and good first step in reforming our healthcare system. Some at that time called me liberal even though I have always been independent. Nor does it make me a conservative because I believe Senators Coburn and Lieberman have a reasonable proposal. It makes me, and others, practical.
If we are going to be able to solve the enormous challenges facing our country, we are going to have to find a way to move past partisan bickering and be open to new ideas. There are some very important issues to consider:
1) The current Medicare program is not sustainable in its current form. We know this because both parties and the Congressional Budget office agree that at some point in near future, if we do not restructure the program, Medicare will run out of money.
2) There is no one good answer to solve this problem. And since there are so many problems and an even greater number of solutions, we are all going to have to accept compromise. Liberals and conservatives, along with independent politicians are going to have to stop the nonsense and sit together to work something out.
3) The rhetoric is wasting valuable time which our country can ill afford.
The current proposal requires compromise and sacrifice from everyone and it will not be easy. We must be willing to try. If for no other reason, Medicare will run out of money and changes will be rushed and forced on all of us. Careful planning will go by the wayside. It's always better to plan ahead and make changes/fix mistakes along the way, particularly when it comes to something as complex as fixing Medicare. Give Senators Lieberman and Coburn a chance to be heard. Ultimately, America may say no to their idea and that is democracy at work. But to silence potentially good ideas without meaningful debate and discussion is a national shame. Further, it prolongs the impression that nothing can be done in Washington. It puts all of us, who will someday rely on the Medicare system, at risk of losing a national safety net that is too important to go away.

Having flown into the second stop on their North American tour earlier in the day, Prince William and Kate Middleton got down to business after touching flown at Montreal Airport on Saturday (July 2).
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge immediately headed over to the Sainte-Justine University Hospital - where they were greeted by both fans and protestors, some of which held up signs with nasty messages such as "Royal Parasites! Go Home!".
Explaining the anti-monarchy sentiments, one of the protestors told local press, ?We think it?s a useless institution that has no place today. We are capable of governing ourselves without people who have the title of king by divine right. The idea that God made them king is a philosophy of the Middle Ages.?
As for their hospital visit, William and Kate toured the treatment center, with Miss Middleton lovingly sitting down to spend time with patients in the children's cancer ward.
Once finished up at Sainte-Justine, the royal newlyweds were escorted to board the MCS Montreal to meet a handful of naval officers before finally bringing an end to what was another long day.

The report, produced by Ready4Ventures, notes that only 4 out of 66 investors and 4 out of 109 entrepreneurs interviewed were women. Both data serve to underline the need for Ellas 2.0?s mission to remedy the shortage of female talent in the industry.
Other significant findings were that 72% of entrepreneurs used savings and family support to launch their projects and 43% see grants as a primary source of funding.
The entrepreneurs surveyed considered ICT as the sector with the most potential. The most frequently cited business challenges for startups were access to finance, customer acquisition and bureaucratic public administration.
The good news is that 55% of investors believe they have more money to invest during 2011 and 2012 and only 18% believe they have less.

French finance minister Christine Lagarde was today announced as the first female leader of the International Monetary Fund. She takes over from Dominique Strauss-Kahn, beginning her five-year term on 5 July.
With a background in law, rather than economics, Lagarde made her mark as the first and only female economy minister of a G8 country to date by surrounding herself with strong advisers and by using her impeccable English and media savvy to get her message out. The Financial Times named her last year the best economy minister in the eurozone and Forbes ranked her the 17th-most important woman in the world.
Her role at the heart of the eurozone debt crisis was probably crucial in securing her new position with the IMF. She has been a champion of eurozone solidarity, urging the likes of Germany and France to pull together to support weaker members. She also played a key role in securing a 750 billion euro (673bn) EU-rescue fund during the debt market crisis in 2009.
Talking about negotiations such as these, Lagarde has said that her understated, feminine approach can prove an asset when dealing with male peers.
The chancellor, George Osborne, hailed Lagarde as "good news for the global economy and for Britain". He said "She is the best person for the job, which is why Britain was one of the first countries to propose her. She has been a strong advocate for countries tackling high budget deficits and living within their means."
President Nicolas Sarkozy described the appointment as a "victory for France", even though her departure leaves him vulnerable to attacks that the strong female cabinet presence he promised has evaporated.
?I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me,? said Miss Lagarde of her new role.

Beautiful couple: Kate Moss and guitarist Jamie Hince.Bride-to-be Kate Moss stood by John Galliano after all.
The 37 year-old supermodel walked down the aisle Friday in a sparkling 1920's style gold and cream wedding gown. Galliano reportedly designed her beautiful floor length veil as well.
Moss looked dazzling in the vintage-style gown, which had sheer embellishments, glittering stones and embroidered gold leaf.
The groom, rock guitarist Jamie Hince, looked dapper in a double breasted blue suit by Yves Saint Laurent.
Her 14 bridesmaids wore flowers in their hair for the summer wedding at St. Peter's Church in Southrop, in Gloucestershire, England.

Back in February, just weeks before Galliano became embroiled in an alleged anti-Semitism scandal that took down his career, Moss announced that she had chosen him to design her dress.
Many wondered if his legal woes and his drug and alcohol rehabilitation would cause Moss to make a last minute switch.
Moss's wedding is a who's who of British rock star and fashion royalty. Her maid of honor is Trish Simonon, the wife of Clash bassist Paul Simenon. Actress Sadie Frost, who was once married to actor Jude Law, will be a bridesmaid. They will be wearing dresses by Erdem and Christopher Beales, according to Vogue.
The supermodel may have graced hundreds of magazine covers and walked a thousand catwalks but she admitted to being extremely tense about her upcoming big moment.
"I was so nervous when I was practicing signing the register," she told the Daily Mail. "I've been so stressed out. My hands were shaking like an old woman's!"
The couple's friend, Primal Scream bassist Mani told Metro that the groom wasn't feeling quite as nervous.
"He's marrying a supermodel," he said. "What's there to be nervous about?"
The three-day post reception and celebration is set to include a "Casablanca" film theme, fireworks, doves and the request that guests bring swimwear and water pistols.

After a day of pomp and circumstance, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, appeared to relax a bit as they attended a pop concert Friday night in Ottawa, Canada.
The royal couple also got to see the Parliament Hill event conclude with a fireworks show. The festivities were part of Canada Day celebrations and featured national music acts, including Sam Roberts and Great Big Sea.
William and Kate weren't alone. They joined more than 300,000 others gathered at the event. Kate wore a purple dress from Issa, according to media reports. The Prince loosened up for the evening and didn't wear a tie.
The concert took place on what would have been William's mother's birthday. Princess Diana, who died in a Paris car crash in 1997, would have been 50 on Friday.

CALABASAS - Cecilia Bellissimo was ready to rock.
As a fog machine added atmosphere and a spotlight animated her face, the 9-year-old aspiring star struck her best rock 'n' roll pose and began to sing.
"I just like music, it feels good," said Cecilia, who plays the guitar and practices the piano at least twice a day.
Cecilia was posing for a photo shoot, part of the rock-star experience that she and 16 other youths are living this week at the "Rock & Roll High" summer camp held at a community center in Calabasas.
The program, which started in 2005, encourages individuality, collaboration and musical development. Founder Aaron Burch said since the camp opened, it's evolved into a program that is about more than rocking out.
"We're teaching the kids not just music but creativity and we make sure every kid has a positive social experience," Burch said.
For Cecilia, who lives in Hidden Hills, the experience had extra meaning. She is recovering from a type of cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma and credits music with helping give her strength and courage throughout the year-long treatment. Around her neck she sports a chain with a silver guitar pick, engraved with the word "Faith."
Cecilia and her sister Gracie, 11, - who is also participating in the camp - make
up two-thirds of a band named the Chicklets."It's really fun to have a band together and to be able to combine each other's talents," Gracie said. "I enjoy song writing. Hopefully one day we can have our own music; that would be a dream come true for us."
With a young class, Burch said he developed a special technique to teach his students. They learn how to play an instrument and about music through his "star theory," which is based on color coordination and rhythm. He uses different colored stickers of stars on the instruments themselves to help his pupils with proper hand placement and coordination.
Then he'll repeat memorable phrases like "Henry the hungry alligator chomps down on the red star, when he chomps down, he never lets go," as he teaches them to chomp down with their fingers on a guitar chord.
"The guitar is pretty complicated," Burch said. "The challenge was to give them an experience they want to continue after the one week."
During a song-writing session, Burch calls on his class to help choose a color combination, one they previously learned, followed by a topic.
For example, one suggested topic for an impromptu song was frozen yogurt. "Cookie dough and tart, with marshmallows on top," were the lyrics that the classroom rocked out to either through their instruments or voice.
Each band formed during the program writes its own song and records a demo and a music video. The Hooligans, a band made up of three 9-year-olds that formed at the "Rock & Roll High" camp, hope they have gotten good enough to someday score a record deal.
Their big single: "Darth Vader for President." (The chorus declares "Darth Vader for president ... It would be excellent.")
For Burch, the biggest satisfaction derives from witnessing his students express themselves lyrically or musically, regardless of their circumstances or abilities.
"It's incredible and moving. It's helped a lot of kids," he said. "One great thing about music is that physicality is not a barrier. For music, all you need is your brain to be creative."
Another aspect of the program is teaching students about social responsibility. Since writing and recording original content is on the camp's agenda, the original music will be available for sale on iTunes by the fall.
All proceeds will go to a new foundation started by one of the campers. Ella Gans, 8, and her 15-year-old brother, Jonathan, have launched a group they called "Grades and Giving" that provides tutoring and then donates the fees to the St. Jude Medical Foundation for cancer research.
"It's a fundraiser that really ties it all together," Burch said.
The camp program is set to continue with five-day sessions for the next 10 weeks. Locations vary throughout the summer, starting in Los Angeles County and ending in Ventura County. For more information call 805-907-8933.

If you still long for the days when Britney Spears and Kevin Federline were a happy couple -- then there's an eBay auction you might to check out ... and it comes straight from K-Fed's family.
Kevin's grandfather, Earl Story, has put a slew of items up for auction on eBay from back when Brit and K-Fed were a happy couple. The highlights include: the wedding invitation, an invite to Brit's baby shower, a hat K-Fed once wore to an awards show (signed by Brit and K-Fed) and 14 wedding pics, some of which didn't make the tabloids.
K-Fed's aunt tells TMZ she is helping put the items up for sale because Earl's wife recently passed and the family encouraged him to sell off a few things and use the money to take a trip and help take his mind off things.
She says Earl is holding back a few things -- like some of the more personal photos -- and has K-Fed's blessing to make whatever money he can.

In every recent photo of Kate Middleton wearing a skirt or dress, she appears to bewearing pantyhose. Young women never wear those anymore. Are pantyhose required by the RoyalFamily?
?Susan W., Des Moines, via the inbox
Many things are required of British royal ladies?waving with a closed hand, for example, and wearing hats that double as radar dishes, lest the Germans decide to bomb London again.
But when it comes to Kate Middleton's royal gams, I have some dish that may surprise you:
SERVED! Kate and William Hit Wimbledon!
Chicks overseas actually like their old-fashioned hosiery.
Yes, really?even the pantyhose in that awful "suntan" color that matches three people, and exactly three people, at any given time.
"Tan colored tights are enjoying a fashion renaissance led by younger women ranging from the Duchess of Cambridge and her sister, Pippa Middleton, to Cheryl Cole and Carla Bruni," sayeth the Telegraph newspaper of London. Citing a possible fear of tanning-related cancers, the paper noted that fancy pantyhose-maker Wolford has seen a 29.5 percent increase in such sales compared with the same period last year.
Beyonc and Sarah Jessica Parker also have reportedly embraced tan pantyhose in recent months.
It's a trend. A trend, I say!
And so does Angela Rippon, a distinguished British journalist and expert on all things royal family.
"Perhaps in parts of America 'young women today never wear pantyhose,' but here in Britain that's not the case," Rippon tells me. "The pantyhose (or tights as we call them) industry is alive and well and an important part of the fashion industry.

"Frankly it's all down to personal choice, and the weather! And as far as women in the royal family are concerned, the same rules apply. Like every other woman in Britain, they will make a decision based on the time of year, how good their legs look without tights, the occasion andthe outfit they're wearing."
In other words, Rippon confirms, "There is no 'royal family rule.' It's entirely up to them."
Viva, tan pantyhose! What's next, the return of acid-washed jeans?

"I have moved on and forgiven him even though he's never apologized to me or the kids," she told us. "We go through the lawyers. I couldn't care less if I don't talk to him but my kids suffer. It's kind of a cowardly way out. I hope some day he can grow up and be a big boy and talk to his ex-wife for his kids sake."
Were you frustrated at being portrayed as the bad guy?
Right, at this point nobody heard my side, he went out there and made it look like I was screwing some 19 year old, my kid's high school friend and it was nothing like that, trying to make it like maybe I was the one possibly doing the cheating. It killed me but I had good lawyers, everything is going through the court system, I don't want to look like a blabbermouth, the truth will come out. At that point I didn't really care what the public thought of me. I was concerned about my kids who were already being embarrassed enough by the public divorce. My job first was to be a good mom, make sure I got through this divorce without too much trouble.
Tell me about those last few years of the marriage.
I was doing all the gluing and mending and keeping the family together. Making everyone look good, handling the show and the kids careers, handling the animals, the house, the TV show. I was like the camel, they just loaded me up. It just got to the point where I had a feeling my husband was having an affair, I knew it in my heart of hearts, I just didn't have proof. When a husband is cheating he doesn't act the same, I certainly knew that, I knew there was a problem.
Do you wish you had had the guts to leave earlier?
I think that would be my message to women, just quit making excuses for everything. Look at the situation, maybe write things down because sometimes they become clearer when you see them on a piece of paper. I just think like stop messing around, Life is short, nobody is guaranteed 90 years here and at some point, you know your kids are going to be ok and when you find out your husband is doing that to you, you really don't have faith in anything anymore, it's gone. I said to myself, 'I cried my last tear over him, he's not worth it. I'm not going to feel sorry for myself, I feel sorry for him. He's the one who has to live with himself and look in the mirror knowing what he's done, destroyed a family.
Do you talk at all?
I don't speak to him. I'm able to forgive and move on. I have moved on and forgiven him even though he's never apologized to me or the kids. We go through the lawyers. I couldn't care less if I don't talk to him but my kids suffer. He only wants to communicate through lawyers which leads me to the conclusion that he doesn't want to have to account for any past actions. It's kind of a cowardly way out. I hope some day he can grow up and be a big boy and talk to his ex-wife for his kids sake.
How's Charley?
We've been dating for three years. He's a soul mate. I really needed somebody at that time in my life, I was alone and needed someone so much. He became a great friend and then it became physical and emotional and everything else. He's just a super, awesome person. He's proposed to me and I've accepted. It's not like it's a cut and concrete things. It's just something we would like to do. I love being with someone younger, I'm kind of a young spirit and he's kind of an old soul so it works out.
He is about 30 years younger and one of your son's friends, though.
My husband made everyone think he was my son's high school friend. It wasn't like that at all. He attended the same school in a different year. My kids did not know him and I didn't meet Charley until almost ten months after I'd filed for divorce. My husband was already living with another woman way before that.

A judge has granted Brooke Mueller to get direct child support payments from Charlie Sheen.LOS ANGELES -- A judge has ordered Charlie Sheen's former bosses to garnish $55,000 a month for child support from any payments they make to the former "Two and a Half Men" star.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Hank Goldberg on Friday approved a request by Brooke Mueller Sheen to garnish any payments Warner Bros. Television makes to her ex-husband.
The former couple was divorced on May 2, about two months after Warner Bros' fired Sheen from "Men." The actor and the studio have been fighting over payments ever since.
The hefty monthly payments are intended to support the Sheens' twin sons and were part of a divorce settlement they reached earlier this year.
The actor's spokesman Larry Solters declined to comment. Brooke Sheen's attorney did not immediately return a phone message.

Mel Gibson and his estranged wife Robyn have been in divorce discussions since 2009.LOS ANGELES -- An attorney for Mel Gibson's estranged wife says the former couple has nearly finalized their divorce.
Attorney Laura Wasser told a judge Tuesday that the pair have resolved all their issues and are doing some "final polishes" on the paperwork.
Wasser says the couple should have a judgment ready by Aug. 30.
Gibson's attorney agreed with Wasser's assessment
Robyn Gibson filed for divorce in April 2009, just months before the Oscar winner's then-girlfriend gave birth to an infant daughter. He indicated in court filings that the couple separated in 2006.
No details of how the couple's assets will be divided was discussed Tuesday, and Wasser indicated those details would remain private. The former couple have seven children together, but only one who is under the age of 18.

After months of debating and lamenting the fiscal crisis, Los Angeles Unified officials Thursday finalized the budget for the 2011-12 school year, using employee concessions and about 3,000 layoffs to help close a $408 million deficit.
The state budget signed Thursday by Gov. Jerry Brown, however, could prompt the district to review its books and potentially hire back more employees. The state budget contains more revenue for education than expected, meaning the district could add $180 million more to its spending plan.
The LAUSD budget calls for about $7 billion in spending, compared with $7.1 billion last year.
The school board voted 6 to 1, with Marguerite LaMotte dissenting, to approve the budget that lays off some 1,900 teachers, nurses and counselors. The cuts were far less severe than the "worst-case scenario" district officials had presented in February.
That proposal would have laid off more than 5,000 educators, and 2,000 cafeteria workers, office clerks, bus drivers and other support staff. Class sizes would have increased in grades K-8.
After most employee unions agreed to take four furlough days and the state budget appeared to take a turn for the better, district officials still characterized the budget as a "survival" plan.
"No one on this board thinks this
budget is a good idea," said board president Monica Garcia. "This budget is about surviving a very dark period."The state budget for the fiscal year that begins today includes several provisions that could change LAUSD's current fiscal plan.
One asks districts to assume they'll be funded next year as they were this year, based on the Legislature's expectation that state revenues will increase by $4 billion.
Since LAUSD officials included a cut of some $330 per student based on an expected decline in state funding, this provision could mean up to an additional $180 million for the district - nearly half of this year's deficit.
However, LAUSD's Chief Financial Officer Megan Reilly said the plan could put districts in a very uncomfortable position, asking them to rely on a rosy financial outlook that hasn't materialized.
Another provision asks district to ignore the "trigger cut" of some $2 billion to education that would come if revenues don't appear. A third prevents school districts from laying off any more staff next year, according to an Assembly analysis of the bill.
"This goes against everything I've ever known about a budget," Reilly said.
Union leaders, however, said the district should be happy with the news from Sacramento.
"We're very pleased that a budget was signed on time by Gov. Brown, only the second time it's happened in 10 years. That alone is a victory," said Judy Perez, president of Associated Administrators Los Angeles.
Perez urged LAUSD financial officials to realize that the Legislature's assumptions are based on data and tax revenues already collected and asked district officials to instead turn their eye to the issue of declining enrollment.
Since 2008, LAUSD has laid off more than 4,600 teachers, principals, counselors, and other school support staff and 3,000 office clerks, custodians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers and other school personnel, according to district documents.
While state budget cuts have prompted many of those cuts, declining enrollment continues to threaten LAUSD programs and personnel. This year LAUSD's enrollment dropped to some 672,000 students - down 80,000 from its peak enrollment of 747,000 in 2002 - and projections point to a deeper decline for next year.
More than half of the students that have left the district have gone to charter campuses, which are publicly funded but run free from most state and district mandates.
School board member Steve Zimmer asked Superintendent John Deasy to draft a long-term plan for addressing the exodus of students.
"I am not talking about capping charter schools ... I am talking about expanding the kinds of opportunities that will attract families to stay at LAUSD," Zimmer said.
Among those attractive options, Zimmer talked about magnet schools, dual-language schools and span schools serving kids from K-8 - all models that have proven successful in pockets of LAUSD.
