Pippa Middleton Digs Geothermal Energy

Pippa Middleton, 27 year old sister to Princess Kate, is green with sustainability, not envy. Middleton has just joined the UK start-up, Cluff Geothermal, launched in 2010, by the top-tier team of Algy Cluff, George Percy, Blondel Cluff, Prof. Sir Christopher Edwards, and Prof. Paul Younger, FREng, Director & Consultant.

The company aims to explore and develop deep geothermal energy sources. It believes that in Europe as a whole, and in the UK specifically, there is huge potential for this resource. Speculation is that Middleton?s role will be to raise awareness of the benefits of geothermal energy as a clean, sustainable, renewable energy source with overlooked potential.

EGEC, the European Geothermal Energy Council, states that:

?Geothermal energy comes from the earth and is a renewable energy resource delivering heat and power 24 hours a day throughout the year, an energy resource nearly infinite and available all over the world.?

Geothermal power presently supplies the world with 10,715 Megawatts of electricity in 24 countries on six continents. The potential to use geothermal resources is much greater. With the technology available today and under development for the future, geothermal resources could supply more than 300,000 Megawatts of power, while producing far fewer carbon emissions than from legacy sources.

The largest geothermal district heating systems within Europe can be found in the Paris and Munich area, with Austria, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Slovakia and others showing a substantial number of interesting geothermal district heating systems. Sweden, Switzerland, Germany and Austria are the leading countries in terms of market for geothermal heat pumps in Europe.

Today, geothermal power plants exist on every continent, at any place where reservoirs of steam or hot water can be found. They produce, with conventional technology, 900 MWe of electric power in the EU, around the clock. The relevant resources are far from being fully developed, also in Europe.

Dr. Ryan Law, Founder and Managing Director of Geothermal Engineering and Chair ofREA?s Deep Geothermal Group sees utilisation of geothermal energy as prime to take off. A 2006 MIT study3 about the potential of geothermal technology in the US found that ?the US government has now become the world's biggest investor in geothermal exploration.? Germany is overtaking that spot with The Renewable Heat Act (EEWrmeG); a law passed in 2004 which states that by 2020, 14% of the heat in Germany must come from renewable energy sources.

Now the UK is joining the race towards sustainable renewable energy development and is showing keen interest in expanding investments in geothermal power as a sustainable and renewable energy source.

David Cameron, UK Prime Minister, stated, ?? a Conservative government will provide generous incentives to give this new industry the shot in the arm it needs to get going? We need to play catch-up."

Will Kate Middleton in the team, the company may be able to make big movements in the alternative energy scene.
