Bioness Inc.: The Valencia-based company has received FDA approval for a wireless neurostimulation system that can help improve mobility for those suffering from stroke, multiple sclerosis, or traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. Utilizing an electrical stimulus delivered to the muscles of the thigh and lower leg, the system helps lift the user's foot to aid walking.

Blue Shield of California: Nine teams from the health plan's Woodland Hills office logged 1,384,991 steps, or nearly 700 miles, during the first week of a wellness initiative dubbed Shape Up Shield. About 1,300 Blue Shield employees in California have registered to participate.

Pamela K. Brukaker: The religion professor at California Lutheran University received the campus' President's Award for Teaching Excellence. She is retiring after 17 years and will be an emeritus faculty member at the Thousand Oaks university.

Child & Family Center: The Santa Clarita nonprofit organization raised $181,000 through its recent Taste of the Town event.

Gary Goddard: The architectural designer and owner of the North Hollywood-based Goddard Group oversaw the May 15 opening of the $1.9 billion Galaxy World Mega Resort Macau. The company handled the concept, planning and design of the resort, which has a Southeast Asian palace theme.

NBC News: Has partnered with the University of

Phoenix to provide free licenses to its NBC Learn online teaching tool to all middle and high schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Northrop Grumman Corp.: Digital Avionics Suite technology developed by the company's Woodland Hills-based Navigations System Division was recently used in the successful flight of a UH-1N helicopter that serves as an avionics test bed for future rotary-wing hardware and software developments. In a separate project, the division has partnered with the the Georgia Institute of Technology to develop a new type of gyroscope technology for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

QSR Systems: The provider of Avid Rental Systems is relocating in Valencia to a 20,000-square-foot property it purchased at 24950 Avenue Kearny. Brett Warner, a principal with Lee & Associates-LA North/Ventura Inc., represented the buyer and CB Richard Ellis represented the seller, The Realty Associates Fund. The purchase price was more than $2 million.

George W. Schaeffer: The founder, president and CEO of North Hollywood-based OPI Products will be the namesake of the lobby of the Advanced Health Sciences Pavilion being built at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in recognition of his financial support.

George Smith Partners: The commercial real estate investment banking firm arranged a $19.2 million cash-out refinance of a bridge loan on Sylmar Towne Center, a 150,000-square-foot retail center anchored by Ralphs, Big Lots, CVS and Kragen Auto Parts. Sprouts Farmer's Market: The Westlake Village store received a Platinum Certification Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its for green refrigeration system. The award is the first for a business in California.

Reza Zafari: The vice president at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in Century City was included on a list of "America's Top 100 Financial Advisers" compiled by Barron's magazine. Zafari, of Encino, is also partner in Jones, Zafari, Klein, Tournat and Castagnola Group.
