What:With a load of A-list help from honorary chairs Franois-Henri Pinault and Salma Hayek and co-chairs Colin Firth, Stella McCartney, and Anna Wintour the annual, fashionable gala honored the late designer, whose work will be on display at the Met from May 4 ? July 31.

Where:The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City

When:Monday night

Guest list:Madonna, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Kate Hudson, Demi Moore, Fergie, Josh Duhamel, Gisele Bundchen, Tom Brady, Kristen Stewart, Emma Stone, Claire Danes, Hugh Dancy, Diane Kruger, Joshua Jackson, Penelope Cruz, Rosie Huntington-Whitley, Jason Statham, Lucy Liu, Eva Mendes, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Thandie Newton, Mary J. Blige, Jessica Alba, Iman, Emma Roberts, Tom Hooper, Ginnifer Goodwin, Barbara Walters, Rene Zellweger, Hamish Bowles, Andre Leon Talley, John Legend, Joy Bryant, Taylor Swift, Sarah Burton.

Remembering McQueen:Guests dressed in their McQueen best, or in eye-catching designs that honored the British designer who committed suicide last year. "He's the best," said Bundchen in a long red McQueen gown as pal Naomi Campbell walked nearby in a white ensemble also by the designer. "I'm very happy I'm able to wear one of his dresses." Gala-regular Swift gushed over the designer. "I think as far as wearing Alexander McQueen it's amazing that everyone is showing up and dedicating a look to him tonight," she said, wearing a dramatic J. Mendel gown. Designer Kenneth Cole called McQueen "a real pioneer. He had his own brave sense of aesthetic and he defined his own path, always."

Extreme fashion:Even the high-profile guests were marveling at each other's over-the-top duds. "It's like the Oscars of fashion," said Kruger, who was escorted and dressed by Jason Wu (boyfriend Joshua Jackson was also on hand). It was Kruger's fourth year at the gala. "It's really the place to be for people watching," she said. Stars such as Lucy Liu went dramatic in black feathered Vionnet, Lopez wore dramatic fuschia Gucci and Madonna had stars trailing the derriere of her Stella McCartney gown. "Right now I'm just holding up my train, making sure everything's in place," said Fergie in a long white Marchesa gown. "I have an Alexander McQueen bag. I love it."

Extreme news:President Obama's news that Osama Bin Laden was captured and killed was a hot topic among the fashion crowd. "I think President Obama did an amazing job in keeping it low key and just coming out and telling us when it was done," said Campbell. "Bravo." "I was very proud of the country," Donald Trump told reporters, escorting wife Melania. "(Bin Laden) truly deserved it." Jason Wu said he felt pride. "I feel like today is a day to celebrate, both a triumph for our country and a triumph in fashion," said Wu. "It's a great day."

High school haute:Which stars got a jump on style before they made it big? "If you'd have seen me in high school I had a big mullet and a t-shirt and jeans," said Duhamel, who walked the carpet with Fergie. "She wouldn't have had me." "Nerd would be the word to describe me in high school," said Legend, who's soon going on tour with Sade. "I still am. I'm a nerd with a good stylist."

Hot mommies:A very pregnant and glowing Kate Hudson showed up in a goddess-style Stella McCartney dress. All in the family" Paul McCartney patted her bump before the two ascended the carpeted stairs. Meanwhile, Alicia Keys showed off her post-baby body in Givenchy, as did Miranda Kerr in tutu-like Marchesa. A pregnant Jessica Alba radiated health in a flowing, silvery Ralph Lauren gown.

Wedding dish:Barbara Walters, in Oscar de la Renta, arrived close to last and blamed her tardiness on wedding woes. "I was late because I was sleeping. I came in from London yesterday," she said. Tory Burch, who brought Kanye West to the gala said she loved Kate's gown, which was designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. "It reminded me a little bit of Grace Kelly," she said. Fellow Brit and King's Speech director Tom Hooper said he watched the wedding American-style. "I watched it from New York and got up like everyone else at 4 in the morning," said Hooper. "I was impressed by how Brits did the event. There were no mistakes, it was like a fairy tale." Fergie thought Kate looked "divine." "I thought Kate looked so lovely, so appropriate," she said. Michael Kors said Kate "managed to look modern but still respect history. I loved her hair, I loved her makeup, I loved their getaway car. Pippa's pretty foxy too."
