The season 12 finale of Dancing with the Stars is just one week away but the professional dancers and their celebrity partners aren't necessarily fretting about whether or not they'll perform the anticipated freestyle dance ? or, ultimately, take home the mirror ball trophy.

Instead, the dancers' thoughts were with Kym Johnson, whose horrible fall while rehearsing with Hines Ward was replayed during Monday's emotional show.

"You hate to see bad things happen to good people and Kym Johnson does not have a bad bone in her body," Chelsea Kane told PEOPLE backstage on Monday night. "She is so kind and supportive of all of us and is such a light in this competition. For her to be in a neck brace? We were scared."

Despite the scare, Johnson felt she had an obligation to soldier on.

"I wanted Hines to make the finals. I wouldn't have wanted Hines to have to dance with somebody else," said Johnson, who allowed fellow pro Cheryl Burke to step in and rehearse with Ward over the weekend.

Her partner was understandably protective. "I told her, 'You know your body better than anyone else. If you're not feeling it don't do it,' " Ward said. "I know the competitor she is."

That's why nobody dared try to talk Johnson into bowing out.

"Dancers, man. You just can't do it," Mark Ballas said. "You don't quit."

That's easy for Ballas to say. He and Kane are in a very strong position going into the semifinal results show on Tuesday firmly atop the leader board, though Johnson and Ward had a terrific night as well.

And while it appears that Ralph Macchio and Karina Smirnoff have a mountain of odds against them, the two aren't counting themselves out just yet. Despite being the lowest scoring couple last week, their fan votes pulled them through. Will that again be the case?

Macchio is optimistic: "We have so much more to bring," he said.

The live results show airs Tuesday (9 p.m. ET) on ABC.
